100+ Tribes

The Australian history education system primarily centres on world history, leaving Indigenous Australian history as a secondary chapter. Australia’s assimilation policy provided an opportunity for Indigenous Australians to gather and integrate into Australian society. In 1788, more than a thousand settlers arrived in New South Wales; since then, settlements have expanded along with urban development, agriculture, and the spread of religion. This process of assimilation has led to the deprivation of the traditional culture, language, and identity of Indigenous Australian groups. How can the trade-off of assimilation allow indigenous groups to preserve their own culture and thus decrease the possibility of iteration?
